Freshman Charlie DeFeo scored in the 100th minute to lift the Vermont Catamounts to a 2-1 overtime victory against Stony Brook in the final conference game of the season for both teams in men's soccer action at Virtue Field on Saturday.
With the victory, the Catamounts capture their first America East Regular Season title since 1989. Vermont will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming America East Tournament and receives a first round bye. UVM will host a semifinal game on November 7 at Virtue Field.
Berian Gobeil Cruz broke a scoreless tie and gave Stony Brook a 1-0 lead in the 82nd minute. The Seawolves were attacking and able to swing the ball around the perimeter of the penalty box with a sequence of passes. Gobeil Cruz collected a short pass from Leonardo Fernandes and sent a blast from six yards out past UVM goalkeeper Conor Leland.
The Catamounts answered back six minutes later. Sean Sweeney sent a long service into the penalty area from just over midfield and Zach Paul was able to run onto the ball and headed it past Stony Brook goalkeeper Stefan Manz to force extra time.
Leland finished the game with two saves for Vermont, who closes out regular season action with an 8-4-5 record and posts its first unbeaten mark in conference play since 1989.
