Trick-or-treat alternative in Vergennes

VERGENNES, Vt. -

A new trend in trick-or-treating called 'trunk-or-treating' is growing in Vermont.

In Vergennes Sunday, a trunk-or-treat was organized by the American Legion.  Residents sign up for a parking space, decorate their car trunks and hand out candy to kids of all ages.  Organizers say the structure of a scheduled time and place increases safety without taking away from the fun.

"Everybody appreciates it, especially when Halloween falls on a weekday school night. This provides them with the opportunity with them to do it during the day," said Martha DeGraaf, the event's organizer.

"We came today because it's so much safer than going out at night, in my opinion, and it's just a fun family activity,"  said Jamie Smith, a mother attending the event.

More than 150 kids turned out for the Sunday event and many other communities are hoping to have trunk-or-treats throughout the week -- as weather permits.
