Entergy: Vt. Yankee secure for Sandy

VERNON, Vt. -

State Emergency Officials are in contact with Vermont Yankee operators.

Several reactors across the northeast are in the storm's projected path, including Vermont Yankee in Vernon.  The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has oversight of the plant's safety, but Vermont Emergency Management's Joe Flynn said they have talked with plant officials and they are comfortable with the plan that is in place.

"They do what they call a walk down not a lock down -- with respect to rain inundation or any flying debris that's not an issue. And we are not getting any indication from Vermont Yankee that that's different then any other day," Flynn said.

The state says Yankee has back up power to operate if the lights go out.
