NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Plattsburgh State women's hockey scored two goals in the third period to settle for a 2-2 against Norwich in the final game of the 2012 East/West Classic Sunday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena.
The game began as a defensive battle as the teams remained scoreless after the first 20 minutes of play.
Norwich (0-0-2) got on the board at the 9:46 mark of the second period was a shot by Marie-Philip Guay snuck under Plattsburgh goaltender Sydney Aveson, giving the Cadets a 1-0 lead. Kaycie Anderson and Tori Charron were credited with assists on the goal.
With the period winding down, Kayla Lascelle took a shot that Aveson was able to kick away. Charron came in for the rebound but was stopped by Aveson's pad. Alison Greene seized the third attempt, lifting her shot over the Plattsburgh goalie and giving the Cadets a 2-0 lead with 1:00 left in the second.
Plattsburgh (1-0-1) was finally able to solve Norwich sophomore goalie Loren Carrier at the 9:30 mark of the third period when Teal Gove slammed home a pass on the doorstep of the crease from Jenny Kistner on the power play to cut the Norwich lead to 2-1.
A little over three minutes later, Plattsburgh's Jordan Caldwell knotted the game up by walking out from behind the net unmarked and sliding the puck near side past Carrier. Breanne Bennett picked up the assist on the goal.
Neither side was able to notch the winner through the remainder of regulation or the five-minute overtime session. Norwich outshot 28-17. Plattsburgh finished 1-for-4 on the power play while Norwich was 0-for-1.
Carrier made 15 saves for Norwich and was named to the All-Tournament Team while Aveson picked up Most Valuable Player honors after stopping 26 shots for the Cardinals. Gove and Kistner were also named to the All-Tournament team for Plattsburgh. Norwich's Guay, Elmira's Olivia Nystrom and Manhattanville's Katie Little rounded out the 2012 East/West Hockey Classic All-Tournament squad.
