A historian has been named the winner of an award inspired by children's author from Newport, N.H.

The Eagle-Times reports Jill Lepore will be presented the Sarah Josepha Hale Award at the Newport Opera House on Saturday, Nov. 10.

Lepore is a professor of history at Harvard University and a staff writer at The New Yorker.

The award, presented since 1956, is a New England honor given by the trustees of the Richards Free Library in Newport, in recognition of a distinguished body of work in the field of literature and letters.

Hale, who wrote several books and hundreds of poems is credited as the person most responsible for making Thanksgiving a national holiday.
