Weinberger encourages blood donations after Sandy

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Burlington's mayor is encouraging residents to give blood to help with a supply shortage in areas hit by Superstorm Sandy.

Mayor Miro Weinberger donated blood this morning and says he will encourage other city employees to do the same. Already, he says the Red Cross saw twice as many people as usual yesterday.

Weinberger says more than 300 blood drives in the region were cancelled because of the storm, causing a dip in the supply.

"It really seems like right now the biggest thing we can do and the best way we can help our neighbors to the south is to give blood and give donations to the Red Cross," Weinberger says. "I think as things emerge in the next couple weeks there will be other needs and we will help if we can."

Weinberger says eight local Red Cross volunteers have already gone down to help, and two more are headed out today.
