NY fund supports Dominican work on rare songbird

Posted: Updated:

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - An alliance of North American scientists is supporting work in the Dominican Republic to preserve the winter habitat of the rare Bicknell's thrush, which breeds on mountaintops in New York, New England and Canada.

Chris Rimmer of the Vermont Center for Ecostudies says decades of studying the tiny songbird have convinced scientists that destruction of winter habitat is its main threat. The thrush winters in the Caribbean, mostly on Hispaniola. Its habitat is threatened by logging, livestock grazing and poor farming practices.

Under a new initiative sponsored by the center and other groups, grants will be awarded on a competitive basis to conservation groups in the Dominican Republic.

The money comes from donations to Bicknell's Thrush Habitat Protection Fund, managed by the Adirondack Community Trust in Lake Placid.
