ORWELL, Vt. -
A 72-year-old from Orwell was swindled out of $5,000 in an apparent phone scam.
Police say the woman was contacted by someone posing as a Bank of America representative who said she'd won more than a quarter million dollars -- but needed to send $5,000 as part of the terms of the contest.
Then, after she sent the money, the person contacted her again, saying she'd actually won more than $4 million but would need to send more money to collect it.
The woman then contacted a friend who told her it was a scam.
