MONTPELIER, Vt. -

The Associated Press has called the presidential race in Vermont for President Barack Obama. Vermont was the first state to be called for the president. The AP expects Obama to beat Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

The AP also expects Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, to return to Washington for another six years. The AP projects the incumbent independent will win over Republican John MacGovern.

The same is true in the race for Vermont's lone U.S. House seat. The AP projects that incumbent Democrat Peter Welch will defeat Republican Mark Donka to win his fourth term in Congress.

And the AP expects Gov. Peter Shumlin, D-Vermont, will beat Republican challenger Randy Brock to win a second term. Brock told WCAX Reporter Kristin Carlson those results are premature and he's waiting to see some vote totals.

Those AP projections are based on exit polling.
