MONTPELIER, Vt. -
The field of candidates vying to be Vermont's secretary of education is down to three.
The State Board of Education just released the names of finalists: Orange Southwest Supervisory Union Superintendent Brent Kay, Superintendent of the Bennington-Rutland Supervisory Union Daniel French and current Education Commissioner Armando Vilaseca.
Vilaseca is looking to stay the state's top education official.
The Legislature last year chose to elevate the job from commissioner to secretary, making it a cabinet position. Secretaries are appointed by the governor and Gov. Peter Shumlin says he'll make his choice before the new year.
