Kuster says balancing budget a top priority

CONCORD, N.H. -

Annie Kuster helped make history in New Hampshire Tuesday by joining an all-female Congressional delegation.

The Democrat met with supporters Wednesday at a restaurant in Concord. She beat incumbent Republican Charlie Bass in the 2nd Congressional District. Kuster says if leaders in Washington cannot keep the nation from plunging over the fiscal cliff on New Year's Day, balancing the budget will be her top priority when she's sworn in.

"I want to make sure we take a look at all of the government programs that are creating the expense, and then let's have a sound policy on revenue. I want to focus on tax relief for the middle class because I believe strongly in the economic principles that it's the growth of the middle class and middle class consumption that creates demand and drives our economy," Kuster said.

Along with Kuster and Governor-elect Maggie Hassan, New Hampshire voters also elected Carol Shea-Porter to the U.S. House. And women reign on the Senate side, too, with Democrat Jeanne Shaheen and Republican Kelly Ayotte.
