Vt. power line vandalism cost utilities $1.25M

Posted: Updated:

The vandal who shot up electric transmission lines in the Northeast Kingdom will cost ratepayers over $1 million.

Police say shots were fired at insulating discs along a stretch of high tension lines running through Concord. The line runs from Quebec to Massachusetts and is capable of carrying 10 percent of the electricity used throughout New England.

The Vermont Electric Power Company owns the line and says replacing the shot-out insulators cost about $250,000, but it cost another $1 million to buy replacement power while the line was shut down for repairs.
