BURLINGTON, Vt. - The UVM men's and women's basketball teams open their seasons on the road Friday night. The men visit Siena, while the women are at Marist. The games will mark the debuts of two familiar faces to fans of UVM and Vermont basketball.
Junior Candon Rusin will make his regular season debut for the UVM men Friday. The former Twin Valley star from Wilmington, Vermont transferred to UVM from Marist after his sophomore year and per NCAA rules had to sit out last season. That meant he could practice with the team, but had to sit on the bench in street clothes and watch as his teammates went on to win the America East championship and advance to the NCAA tournament. Now, the junior has two years left to suit up for his home state school and he is raring to go.
Courtney Pilypaitis, one of the best players in UVM women's hoop history, will be making her coaching debut as an assistant for Lori Gear McBride Friday. Pilypaitis capped a standout career at Vermont three years ago by leading the Cats to their first NCAA tournament win. Then after playing two seasons professionally in Europe, she was a starter on the Canadian Olympic Basketball team this summer in London. Now Pilypaitis is starting the next stage of her basketball life back in Cat Country.
