Moriah Vikings to honor fallen soldier

MORIAH, N.Y. -

The Moriah Vikings football team will honor a former teammate this weekend.

Staff Sgt. Dain Venne was killed last week when a roadside bomb exploded in Afghanistan. Before joining the Army, he was a star linebacker and running back at the school. Venne earned all state honors his senior year.

Saturday, the players will wear Venne's jersey number-- two-- on their helmets during their playoff game versus Rensselaer.

"He was a leader, a true leader, who led by example on and off the field. He was the type of kid who made sure things were going the way they should be going, but at the same time he kept everybody involved and upbeat and truly loved the sport he was involved in, and football was his sport," said Bill Larrow, the Moriah School Superintendent.

Funeral arrangements for Venne have not yet been finalized.
