Sanders urges protection of vets' benefits

Posted: Updated:

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Vermont U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders is leading a drive of more than 50 organizations of veterans and senior citizens to block what he calls significant cuts in veterans' and benefits and Social Security.

Sanders made the call in advance of the Veterans Day holiday.

Sanders is a senior member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee.

He sent a letter to congressional leaders opposing a change in how annual cost-of-living-adjustments are calculated that he says would lower Social Security and veterans' benefits.

He says the proposed cuts are part of the so-called Simpson-Bowles deficit reduction package and would hurt more than 3.2 million veterans who currently receive VA disability compensation payments.

Sanders says there are more than 52,000 veterans in Vermont and that more than 128,000 people receive Social Security benefits.
