A discarded cigarette may be to blame for a fire that destroyed a house in Swanton.
Firefighters responded to the home of Mark and Deb Chevalier on Mountain View Drive at about 3:40 a.m. Monday morning. The entire back side of the house was in flames and had started to get into the interior. Everyone made it out okay, but firefighters had a hard time battling the blaze, which was fanned by gusting winds.
"The wind was definitely a big factor. Once the wind got it, it just took off. Then we had to go to defensive operations because the ceiling and the roof was going to collapse. We went to defensive operations for a little while with out ladder truck and our ladder pipe. And once we got the flames knocked down to a certain point where we could get back inside and start fighting it again," said Swanton Fire Asst. Chief Travis Greeno.
Despite those efforts, the home -- valued at more that $750,000 -- is considered a total loss. A state police fire investigator determined the fire was caused by a cigarette thrown outside the home.
