Food Shelf in dire need of turkeys

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Thanksgiving is just over a week away, but it looks like many families in Chittenden County may not have a turkey on the table.

The Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf is way behind on its turkey donations this year.  Officials there say the presidential election has a large impact on donations every four years because people don't focus on the holidays until after their votes are cast. Although some local food drives have brought in enough side dishes, the Food Shelf's Bob Maritano said they are still in dire need of more turkeys.

"Last year at this time we had 900 to 1,000 birds in the freezer. If you take a look now -- the back wall -- that's it, it's scary," he said.

The Food Shelf has 100 turkeys to give away, but it needs 3,000 this holiday season for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
