VERNON, Vt. -

A Vernon man held police at bay for hours Monday.

Police responded to an apartment building on Fort Bridgman Road Monday morning when 42-year-old Thaddeus Cross threatened suicide and would not let his friend leave the home.

Police evacuated the building and closed Route 142. Police say Cross had guns and threatened to use them. He eventually let his friend leave but stopped negotiating with police. The SWAT team used tear gas and were able to bring Cross out of the apartment safely. He faces an unlawful restraint charge.
