Lunch program bill not forgotten

Posted: Updated:

Lawmakers will not head back to Montpelier until the start of the new year, but some groups are already applying pressure to bills left over from the previous session.

Hunger Free Vermont supports a House bill that would have the state pick up the total cost of lunch for students who qualify for reduced meal prices.

The Bennington Banner reports that 6,000 students qualified for the 40-cent reduced lunch program. Under the proposed legislation, Hunger Free Vermont estimates it would cost the state an additional $320,000 per year to pick up the full cost of the meals.
