Burlington wins IBM Smarter Cities grant

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Burlington is the smallest city in the country to earn IBM's Smarter Cities Challenge Grant.

The IBM challenge has selected 100 cities since 2011 to participate in an energy efficiency program. Each city gets a team of IBM experts to help further sustainability projects in the community.

Burlington will get about $400,000 for this project. Mayor Miro Weinberger says Burlington will spend the money on advancing the city's smart meter program, guaranteeing this grant will save taxpayers money.

"We will save money on utility bills in the future. We will reduce greenhouse gases as a community. There will be ideas, I'm confident that ideas will come from the three weeks together with talented IBM consultants from around the world," said Weinberger, D-Burlington.

The program officially launches in 2013. The mayor says he hopes to apply lessons learned from the IBM consultants in the Queen City to other cities in Vermont.
