First wind turbine up on Georgia Mountain

Posted: Updated:
GEORGIA, Vt. -

The first of four wind turbines is spinning and generating juice atop Georgia Mountain.

The Georgia Mountain Community Wind project calls for two wind turbines in Milton, and two in Georgia.

The 10-megawatt project will provide power directly to Burlington Electric Department-- enough to power about 4,200 homes.

Residents in the community say they have mixed feelings on the project.

"You can see it but they don't bother me," said Eugene Villeneuve of Jeffersonville. "It's cheaper than solar panels."

"It changes the scenery," said Shawn Thayer of Milton. "It's so obvious and I've seen it from every angle and it's out there... so obvious."

"We have a lot of country around here and we don't want to overdo it with too many," said Kevin James Cain of Milton. "I agree if we can use it, harness it and save money for everybody. I don't mind it."

Some neighbors have fought the wind development and that resulted in legal action earlier this year, when opponents sought to camp within the project's blast zone.
