Vt. kids compete in cook-off

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Students from across Vermont competed for thousands of dollars in scholarships by cooking in Montpelier Friday.

It was the fifth annual Vermont Culinary Classic hosted by the New England Culinary Institute. High school kids students technical schools across the state battled it out in a four-course competition. The top three finalists receive $5,000 to attend NECI or they can apply some of that money toward another school program.

"In the last 10 years, the trend of competition, the trend of 'Iron Chef'-style, the trend of ingredients, has really gone up a level. So, to see students produce dishes like you'll see (in this competition) is really amazing," said Joey Buttendorf of NECI.

NECI maintains a close relationship with Vermont technical schools. The majority of its students come from the schools involved in this competition.
