Vermont's unemployment rate continues to rise-- up now for a fifth straight month.
The seasonally adjusted jobless rate for October was 5.5 percent-- that's up one-tenth of a point from September and up nearly a full percentage point since May.
The national rate for October was 7.9 percent, also up one-tenth.
The rising unemployment rate in Vermont follows some other recent troubling economic news, including about 100 layoffs at three Vermont employers last week and a dip in state revenues due to weakness in personal income tax collections.
