RUTLAND, Vt. -

Rutland city police and fire chiefs have issued a challenge to give.

The chiefs are endorsing the Gift of Life Marathon blood drive and are calling upon all emergency and public safety personnel in the county to sign up for the Dec. 18 blood drive. They say it's important they serve as an example for the community at large. This is the 10th year of the blood drive, but the last attempt at breaking the national record of 1,968 pints. Last year the drive fell only about 100 pints shy of that total.

"Well, I think it shows the community that the people who deal with the emergencies every day are as committed to making sure we have a good stable blood supply as the Red Cross tells us that we need here in our area," Rutland City Fire Chief Robert Schlachter said.

Schlachter estimates this challenge could bring in about an extra 700 pints.
