Burlington man accused in shooting denied bail

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A Burlington man charged with attempted murder will not be released from prison before his trial.

Judge Brian Grearson upheld the state's request to hold Andrew Dashno, 19, without bail. Dashno is accused of shooting David Hurne, 41, in the ankle during a fight last weekend in the city's Old North End. Dashno claims Hurne came after him with a baseball bat and the shooting was self-defense. But police say he told them he intended to kill the man.

"Anybody who is going to shoot a gun at someone else is a danger to the community and should be off the streets," Chittenden County Deputy Prosecutor Andrew Strauss said.

Dashno's lawyers did not challenge the ruling. A jury is scheduled to be selected in January, but prosecutors say a plea deal may be reached before then.
