NORTHFIELD, Vt - Norwich and Middlebury earned trips to the Primelink Shootout championship game with a pair of 3-2 wins on the tournament's opening night Friday in Northfield.
The 12th ranked Panthers kicked off the Shootout with a 3-2 win over number five Plattsburgh.
The Panthers scoring three unanswered goals in the second and early third periods to erase an early 1-0 Cardinals lead.
It's Middlebury's first trip to the Primelink championship game since winning the title on the Panthers' home ice in 2008.
In the nightcap, second seed and host Noriwch held off a third period rally to edge number eleven St. Thomas 3-2.
The Cadets jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single goals in the first and second periods. St. Thomas fought back, scoring twice in the third and tying the game at two with just under six minutes to go. But with four minutes left, Kyle Thomas netting the game winning to send Norwich to the championship game for the seventh year in a row.
This will be the fifth time Norwich and Middlebury will meet for the Primelink title. The Cadets are 3-1, but the Panthers won the last meeting between the instate rivals back in 2008.
