Icy road linked to fatal Rutland Town accident

Posted: Updated:
RUTLAND TOWN, Vt. -

It appears the icy conditions contributed to a fatal accident this morning in Rutland Town.

State police say 43-year-old Donna Arnado of Rutland was headed north on Route 7 when her SUV went out of control on an icy bridge and spun into the path of an on-coming pickup. Arnado was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Police say though Arnado was obeying the speed limit, drivers should remember those limits are for driving in perfect weather conditions.

"Typically, if you have to, reduce the speed. If the speed limit is a 35 zone, sometimes 35 is a little too fast for those conditions," said Vermont State Police Sgt. Thomas Mozzer. "This morning I don't believe any salt or sand was dropped at that point, speed should have been probably 35-40."

Sgt. Mozzer says police see an uptick in morning accidents during the first few snowfalls of the year.
