A rough start to the work week Monday as snow showers hit northern Vermont just as the morning commute was beginning.
The timing of the snow and the conditions were just right to turn the roads into ice sheets. There were numerous accidents, with cars sliding off roads and sliding into each other. Those crashes backed up traffic, but in other places traffic ground to a halt simply because the road surface was too slick for cars to keep going. Road crews were out responding to the sudden squalls, spreading salt, but a couple of sections of interstate 89 were shut down for nearly an hour.
