An environmental group says three of New England's top pollution threats are right here in Vermont.
The Toxics Action Center released a new report profiling what they call some of the most egregious polluters in the region. Among those to make the list is the Moretown landfill run by the company Advanced Disposal. The group says repeated violations by the company when it comes to smells and leachate in the groundwater are reasons it should not get a permit to double in size. A proposed Exxon/Mobil tar sands pipeline from Canada to Maine that could cross through the Northeast Kingdom was also singled out.
"There's two primary concerns-- one is the risk of spills. When it does spill, it's much more difficult to clean up, it's much more dangerous, it's much more toxic than conventional crude. The other concern is the climate impacts. The developing of the tar sands, as James Hanson said, would likely be game over for the climate," said Jim Murphy of the National Wildlife Federation.
