When you have diabetes, either type 1 or 2, a meal is never just a meal. You have to count carbs and balance what you eat. It's a constant reminder you have a disease every time you eat which can create a complicated relationship with food. Especially when people are always telling you 'you shouldn't eat this' and 'you can't eat that.'
A new book is out called "Emotional Eating with Diabetes" by Ginger Vieira. She is a wellness and diabetes coach and has type 1 diabetes. That's where your pancreas stops working and you have to take insulin to live. The constant barrage of pressure to eat the perfect diet builds up, and results in an overwhelming habit of punishing yourself with food. "Whether or not you have diabetes, eating perfectly is near impossible for most people. A person with diabetes is lectured constantly, and expected to be perfect-it's simply not realistic," says Vieira.
