'Split the Ticket' program helps with fuel costs

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Vermont fuel dealers are asking you to keep an eye out for neighbors in need this winter.

The "Split the Ticket" program is an annual effort funded by generous donations that are matched by fuel companies to help those families who fall through the cracks in federal and state heating assistance programs.

The companies will fill fuel tanks of those who are having a hard time, but are not reaching out for help.

"We do take recommendation from people who say, 'I know someone in the community, is it possible to help them out?' I forward that information and we work with them. However, we do not take direct solicitation, try should go to the professionals for that," says Matt Cota with the Vt. Fuel Dealers Association.

All the money donated to the split the ticket program goes directly into fuel donations, which are spread out across the state.
