MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Governor Peter Shumlin will travel to Florida next week. His stop in Florida involves evaluating the noise level of the F-35 fighter jets that could be stationed at the Burlington airport.

The governor will be accompanied by Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger and Winooski Mayor Michael O'Brien. Their communities are at the center of a heated debate about the fighter jets.

The governor supports the jets, saying they're important to our National Guard's future and getting the next generation fighters here is an honor. Critics complain the noise level of the new planes will be unbearable for thousands of residents who live near the airport. Shumlin says this excursion will help him evaluate if there's any truth to the noise concerns.

"I feel strongly that when I make a decision I want to be informed. If I can stand there and listen to it, I will have a much better sense of how much noise it makes than if I can only be told," said Shumlin, D-Vermont.

After leaving Florida, the governor will travel to Rome for a Democratic governors conference and spend a week vacationing in Italy.
