Upper Valley community outreach program expands

Posted: Updated:
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. -

A community outreach program in White River Junction is expanding.

Construction is underway for the new Listen Community Services Thrift Store.  The nonprofit's stores throughout the Upper Valley provide about 80 percent of the organization's annual revenue. The new building will also house a teen life skills center and the organization's community dinners program. Last year, Listen served more than 16,000 meals and the need is growing.

"We have been providing community dinners in the Upper Valley for 28 years. We work with over 42 volunteers teams. This will give them a home. They don't have to carry things in and carry things out. It sustains and protects the program because we control the space," said Marilyn Bourne of Listen Community Services.

The project is scheduled to be complete in August of next year. But the organization still needs to raise about $900,000 toward its $2.1 million goal.
