BURLINGTON, Vt. -
A tradition more than two decades old continued in Burlington Sunday with a lighting of a giant menorah on the University of Vermont green.
It's the second night of Chanukah. The public display had to wait until Sunday as Saturday was the Jewish Sabbath, or day of rest.
The Burlington Fire Department lent a ladder truck to help with the lighting and blessing ceremony. Rabbi Yitzhok Raskin with Chabad Vermont said the holiday offers something for everybody to celebrate, even for those of different faiths.
"Going way back over 2,100 years ago when they wanted to enforce -- the Greeks -- their religion upon the residents of Israel, and they fight back, so it began as a freedom of religious idea," he said.
Those who attended Sunday's lighting we're also invited to a holiday dinner at Chabad Vermont following the lighting ceremony.
