The parent company of the Moretown landfill pleaded with the state Monday for permission to continue operations.
The State of Vermont gave Advanced Disposal, the owners of the landfill, until Monday to lay out a detailed plan that would minimize odor and increase oversight at the Moretown facility. The company's plan includes bringing in new management, placing a temporary cap on the landfill to reduce odor and limiting the amount of sludge allowed into the facility. The company argues keeping the landfill open is in the public interest.
"They pay considerable taxes to the Moretown community and the state of Vermont and by keeping operations going we won't have any disruption in the landfill marketplace," said Adam Necrason, an lawyer for the landfill.
Monday's proposal aims to keep the facility running in the short term. If the state approves this plan, Advanced Disposal will continue with its plans to purchase more land in order to keep the facility open past this summer when current space is expected to run out.
