Gov. Peter Shumlin and the mayors of Burlington and Winooski are headed to Florida for a firsthand look at the F-35 fighter jet in action. The trio will visit Eglin Air Force Base in Florida's panhandle.
The Air Force is considering Burlington as a top option for basing a new batch of the military's newest fighter planes, but some worry sound levels will have a negative effect on areas surrounding the airport.
Winooski Mayor Mike O'Brien says the trip will be one factor as he weighs his level of support for the jet.
"I want to try and get relative difference, get some objective monitoring of it, decibel meter of some type, so we have some folks to go on," said O'Brien, D-Winooski.
Reporter Kyle Midura and photographer Andy Goodrich are on their way to meet officials during their tour. They'll have reports starting Wednesday on the Channel 3 News.
