Who's getting your holiday donation dollars?

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

A warning from the Vermont attorney general about giving to charities that rely on paid fundraisers to collect money on their behalf.

The attorney general says Vermont organizations that use third parties to raise money only get about one-quarter of the proceeds and 75 percent of that donated money is kept by the fundraising company.

For example, the Professional Firefighters of Vermont had $1.4 million raised on its behalf, but the fundraiser kept 78 percent of that money. Over $600,000 was raised for the Special Olympics with 65 percent going to the fundraiser. And of the $493,000 collected for the Vermont Police Association, a full 80 percent was pocketed by the fundraiser.
