Sen. Bill Carris
RUTLAND, Vt. -
Senate Majority Leader Democrat Bill Carris is stepping down.
Sen. Carris had been representing Rutland County in the Vermont Legislature since 2006. He had just won re-election in November.
A source tells Channel 3 News that Carris cites back and ankle issues as his reason for leaving the Statehouse.
Carris served on many committees while in the Legislature, including Corrections Oversight, and Economic Development, Housing and General Affairs.
Gov. Peter Shumlin, D-Vermont, issued this statement on Carris' resignation: "Bill's departure from the Senate is a loss to Rutland
County and the state at large. He's worked hard on critical issues, including
economic development, housing and fighting substance abuse, and helped guide
consensus on issues as Majority Leader in the Senate. As the owner of Carris
Reels, Bill also brought an important business perspective to discussions on
virtually every issue."
