Sen. Bernie SandersMONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders is going to become chairman of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee.
The appointment of Sanders, an independent, was made Wednesday by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
Sanders says his first order of business will be to oppose a measure to change the way cost of living adjustments are calculated. He says the largest cuts would affect young, permanently disabled veterans who were seriously wounded in combat.
He calls it "morally and economically unacceptable."
Sanders has served on the Veterans' Affairs Committee for six years.
