BURLINGTON, Vt. -
The gas price feud between Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and the state's fuel dealers is hitting the airwaves.
The owners of R.L. Vallee, a gasoline distributor and retailer, will begin airing a television ad Thursday criticizing Sanders for supporting Costco's plans for a gas station in Colchester that Vallee says would endanger a nearby wetland.
The ad says, "Bernie sided with a multinational billion-dollar corporation over Vermonters, supporting development that will increase traffic and idling emissions, and phosphorous runoff in Lake Champlain, leading to more toxic algae blooms."
Sen. Sanders released this statement responding to the ad: "No one should be fooled; this ad is not about me. The goal here is to suppress competition and to maintain artificially high gas prices in northwest Vermont."
