Fatal crash in Killington

Posted: Updated:
KILLINGTON, Vt. -

One person is dead and another is in serious condition after a car crash in Killington.

It happened Friday, near the Sky Ship gondola on Route 4.

Police say the driver of a pickup truck crossed the centerline into an oncoming box truck. The driver of the pickup, 47-year-old Marland Brewer, died at the scene. The driver of the box truck, 47-year-old Earl Smith of Loudon New Hampshire, was pulled from his vehicle and air-lifted to Dartmouth-Hitchcock. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but at this time, police say it does appear alcohol was a factor. Police are also trying to determine if Brewer was involved in a hit and run crash in the Bristol area earlier in the afternoon.

As of December 3, 2012 the Vermont Governor's Highway Safety Program is reporting 74 fatalities this year, compared to 54 in all of 2011.
