Winooski's mayor is preparing to share his thoughts on the F-35 following his trip to see the controversial plane in action.
Mayor Mike O'Brien traveled with Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger and Governor Peter Shumlin to see the fighter jet last Wednesday. The U.S. Air Force considers Burlington to be a top candidate to house a fleet of the new planes. However, critics argue the they're significantly louder than the current batch of F-16s and will hurt quality of life in the areas surrounding the airport.
O'Brien has not lent support to either side of the argument and will share his impressions from the trip with the city council Monday.
"There's a lot of issues here that come into play -- noise is one and is probably the one that is talked about the most, so yeah, I mean this is just one more piece of information to weigh in determining," O'Brien said.
O'Brien said other factors include an updated Environmental Impact Study that he expects to come out within the next month or two.
Air Force officials have said that a basing decision would likely come by the end of this month, but it is unclear if that timeline will hold.
