Syracuse man rescued after High Peaks tumble

Posted: Updated:

KEENE, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a Syracuse man has been rescued after surviving a fall down an Adirondack mountainside and spending the night in freezing temperatures.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation tells the Press-Republican of Plattsburgh  that the 41-year-old man was hiking with three others Saturday afternoon when he tumbled about 150 feet down a slide on Nippletop Mountain in the Essex County town of Keene.

One of the hikers went to his aid while the other two headed down the mountain to seek help.

Because hazardous weather conditions prevented the use of a state police helicopter, forest rangers weren't able to get the man out of the woods until Sunday night.

The man, whose name hasn't been released, was taken to a local hospital. Information on his condition wasn't available.
