RUTLAND, Vt. -

A Massachusetts man will not face the death penalty for murdering a Vermont woman, but he's unlikely to ever see freedom again if he's convicted.

Frank Caraballo, 30, is charged with killing Melissa Barratt in 2011. Police say Caraballo accused Barratt of stealing drugs from his motel room. So he took her to Dummerston and shot her in the head.

The U.S. Attorney announced Wednesday he will not seek the death penalty in the case. But if Caraballo is convicted of the murder and related drug charges, he faces a mandatory life sentence.
