Fire at granite warehouse in Barre City

BARRE CITY, Vt. -

A granite finishing business sustained heavy damage in a fire Thursday morning.

Police say one of their officers noticed the fire at Houle Granite on South Front Street at about 4:30 a.m. City firefighters got help from departments all over Central Vermont to fight the flames in the huge plant. Fire officials say the building has sprinklers, but fire spread in an area of the attic above that system, and with the metal roof it proved tricky to fight.

"Yeah this time of year we shut down," says owner Roger Houle as he watched the flames. "We had this week to finish up our orders, and I came this morning and found this."

Firefighters had the blaze contained in about four hours and limited the area of damage. Fire officials say good planning and the help from mutual aid departments made the difference in saving the building.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
