LONG ISLAND, N.Y. -

New York Police say a Vermont driver caused a massive and fiery chain reaction crash in New York that killed one person and injured 33 others.

Police say a tractor-trailer smashed into several other cars Wednesday afternoon on the Long Island Expressway, about 70 miles outside of New York City, leaving more than 25 cars strewn across several hundred yards of the road.

The tractor-trailer and at least two other cars caught fire.

Police say a 68-year-old woman died at the scene.

That tractor-trailer was driven by Raymond Simoneau of Rockingham, Vt. Police say he was uninjured.

Investigators are now trying to figure out what caused Simoneau to lose control of the truck. No charges have been filed.
