Democrats line up to replace Rutland County senator

Posted: Updated:

Rutland County Democrats say at least five people have expressed interest in replacing Sen. Bill Carris.

Carris resigned from the Vermont Statehouse last week for medical reasons.

Delegates from Rutland County will vote Jan. 2 on up to three candidates to put before Gov. Peter Shumlin. He has the final say.

Kathy Hall, chairwoman of the Rutland County Democrats, says navigating the nomination process has been difficult because the laws are not clear.

"So, I'm going to spend the next few days calling people around the state who have had to do this recently and find out what sort of protocol, procedures they found worked well, so that we can rather quickly come up with a good procedure not spend a long time deciding how to choose those candidates and then select three names," Hall said.

That meeting will be Jan. 2 at the Lahey Center in Rutland. Opening day of the Legislature is Jan. 9.
