Some may be without power until Christmas Eve

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Wicked winds knocked out power to thousands of Vermonters Friday, and some won't get it back until Christmas Eve.

More than 20,000 people across the state were without power as of Friday evening, with the bulk of the outages in Rutland and Addison counties. The weather service wind gauge at the Channel 3 transmitter atop Mount Mansfield showed a wind gust of 117 mph at 11:02 a.m. Friday. And our engineers tell us they saw a high of 125 mph.

Dotty Schnure of Green Mountain Power says the intense winds are causing even more damages than what utility crews saw in our region from Hurricane Sandy. The line workers are having trouble even getting down some roads to inspect the damage. GMP is bringing in 250 outside workers to help their line crews, but they think it will take them until Christmas Eve to get the power back on for everyone.
