Questions about Costco expansion plans

Posted: Updated:
COLCHESTER, Vt. -

Environmental groups are raising questions about Costco's plan to open a gas station in Colchester.

The company says its gas prices will be significantly lower than local competitors, which has nearby store owners fighting the plan. They've raised objections about traffic and environmental impacts.

Now, the Vermont Natural Resources Council and the Conservation Law Foundation are saying runoff from the proposed expansion will further diminish water quality in the area.

"We're not a party in the Costco project. We're not opposing the Costco project, but we are raising the alarm that this is indicative of the incremental way that we allow our streams to become degraded over time," said Brian Shupe of the Vermont Natural Resources Council.

The groups oppose several expansions of this nature, saying Vermont doesn't do enough to prevent water contamination through new construction. Raising this issue is one of the VNRC's top priorities this upcoming legislative session.
