Burke Mountain gets boost from new partnership

Posted: Updated:
BURKE, Vt. -

Burke Mountain is enjoying a season of growth.

The Northeast Kingdom resort was bought this year by Jay Peak. That has allowed them to expand their snowmaking efforts and draw in visitors.

In November alone the resort says it pumped nearly half of what it would typically pump in a year in an effort to open up trails in the tempermental weather.

But they say the partnership has not changed the character of the ski area.

"It's actually a bigger ski area. It has got 2,000 vertical feet, so it's a destination area that's never been really marketed as a destination area," says Burke General Manager Tim McGuire. "So I think that's really some of the impetus and thoughts behind the acquisition was, let's turn this destination area that's been acting as a locals' mountain into more of a destination mountain."

McGuire also says he thinks the partnership with Jay Peak has helped drive early season business by cross-promoting at the resorts and drawing more attention to Burke.
